You Have to Have an Internal Drive to Succeed
Not winning and not succeeding is not even an option. You have to take great pride in getting tasks accomplished and smashing your goals. Merely hitting your goals is not enough – you have to greatly exceed them. Only if you possess the drive to succeed will you do well in business. It’s not for the timid or meek.
You Must be Self Reliant
Teamwork is important to have success in our field, but at some point, you have to be comfortable with shouldering the responsibilities that come with your profession. You have to be self-reliant enough to celebrate your wins, and learn from your losses.
You Need Willpower
It’s easy to procrastinate and put things off until “later on”. If you want to be successful, you cannot do this. You have to have the willpower and the perseverance to push through and get it done. Those who are successful have remained focused on their goals and have fought to achieve them.
You Have to be Patient
Have you ever heard that old expression “patience is a virtue?” Well, it really is, and you need to have patience to be successful. Very rarely does success happen quickly. Those who “made it” have worked very hard for a very long time to achieve it. It never happens overnight.
You Need Integrity
Sure, you may achieve a certain level of success if you are deceitful, but this will catch up to you. You will only achieve short term false success (just ask Bernie Madoff). If you want true, long term, sustained success, you must be honest. Not only with yourself, but with your customers and clients. Honesty is truly the best policy in business and in life.
You Have to be Passionate
Nobody ever achieved success in a field or in a job that they didn’t like. Only those who are passionate will see themselves win. The reason is simple: if you are truly passionate about what you do, you will work harder to achieve your goals and win. If you are currently not passionate about what you do, it’s time to rethink your situation.
You Have to Connect Well With Others
This one is a no-brainer. If you are working in sales, marketing, or business, the ability to connect with other people is a must. It will be impossible for you to succeed if you cannot network effectively and cannot make meaningful relationships happen. This goes without saying, but this is an important life skill to possess as well.
You Have to be Optimistic
Being optimistic means that you have faith in the future. If you have faith in a positive future, you will work harder to make that future a reality. Not to mention, if you are positive, your optimistic attitude will reflect to your customers and will make your product/company look far more appealing.
You Must be Confident in Yourself
If you trust your gut and trust in yourself to make sound decisions, you will never second-guess yourself. Have you ever been taking an exam in school and made a selection on a question, only to second guess yourself and choose something else? Usually, your first answer was the right one. Having an unshakable trust in your abilities and what you can accomplish will make success and winning seem almost easy.
You Have to be an Effective Communicator
Being able to successfully communicate your thoughts and ideas to others is absolutely crucial for success in business and in life. It will be the only thing that allows you to get your real point across and will allow you to get what you want.
As a sales and business professional, take a step back for a moment and ask yourself if you are truly using all 10 of these traits. If you are honest with yourself, you might find a few of them that are being under-utilized. Work on strengthening those traits and you will undoubtedly see success in work and in life.
