We have all had days, weeks, and months were our sales figures have absolutely tanked. Unless you are lying to yourself, you have, at one point, experienced a sensation of failure. As a result of that, we have all experienced the feelings of failure, sadness, and occupational remorse. These hurdles are hard to overcome, especially when they happen more often than not. How do you battle on and sustain a long and successful career in sales without having the negativity destroy you?
It’s no secret that sales is tough. Pounding the pavement and constantly having your paycheck change based on performance can be difficult to handle. It’s been said many times before that a long-term career in sales is contingent upon your own attitude and how you handle the bad times. Essentially, sales is one giant psychological game with yourself. To be successful, you must master the 3 keys of sales success.
Know What You are Doing
This one is a clear no-brainer, but it’s often the most overlooked. It’s easy to get a job in sales. If you are personable and can make the hiring manager laugh and feel confident in you, you’ll get the job. However, those same traits won’t always work on customers. Sales people are constantly improving and adding to their “toolkit” of techniques to use. They are constantly reading books, watching inspiring movies, listening to Podcasts, and reading blogs (such as this one!). Essentially, you have to accept the fact that there is always more to learn and always ways to improve your craft.
Additionally, knowing your product and industry is even more important. You should be using your down time to research the competition, researching future trends in your industry, and researching your own product. Having a deep knowledge is extremely important. The worst thing is when a customer knows more than you. Don’t be caught empty handed like that.
Like What You are Doing
I don’t really care what you sell or what you do for a living. If you don’t like it, you won’t be successful. Plain and simple. If you go to work every day feeling like it’s the worst place in the world to be, there is no way that you can communicate a positive attitude to customers. They will sense that you are unhappy and will never buy from you.
You don’t have to love every single element about your job though. Every job has pros and cons. Just as long as you are happy with your job and the pros outweigh the cons, you’re good. The bottom line is not doing what you like, but liking what you do
Believe in What you Do
Have you ever sat across from a salesperson who clearly did not believe in the product? It’s so obvious that they think the product is inferior and not worth it, so why the hell would you buy it? If you want to be successful in sales, it’s absolutely necessary to believe in the product. You’ll be surprised in how much belief will change your pitch and your overall attitude.
Watch the video. It’s clear that Kenny truly believes in the product. Not only is he hilarious, but you can tell that he 100% believes that his product works. Just imagine what you could be capable of if you had as much belief as him.
There are many elements of being successful in sales. Overall, if we analyze the thousands of sales lessons and tips for success, it all basically boils down to the above 3 keys to success.
